ST. LOUIS – For the second time ever and first since 2014, the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's tennis team defeated 43rd ranked UIndy 4-3 for the upset win on Saturday afternoon at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center. The Tritons improve to 11-4, 2-0 GLVC while the Greyhounds fall to 6-10, 1-1 GLVC.
Saturday's win over UIndy is the first for UMSL since defeating the Greyhounds 5-2 in the third place match of the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament which was held at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
The Tritons took the opening point of the contest by winning two of the three doubles matches. Their top team of
Hannah Tse and
Morgan Lint got it started with a 6-1 win over Magda Kornijczuk and Silvia Zappoli. UIndy got a win from Sofia Cardenas and Jimena De Pablos as they defeated
Anna Favaron and
Lauren Sweeney 6-2 to square the doubles portion of the contest. UMSL was able to secure the point as
Aleksandra Lopez and
Millie Wileman handed Noelle Compton and Maelys Thiery-James a 6-4 defeat.
The Tritons carried the momentum over to singles play winning the first three singles matches to secure the upset win. Tse picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Thiery-James at number one singles. Wileman followed with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Kornijczuk in the third singles contest. Lint clinched the victory with her three set win over Linya Chen at number four singles. Lint won the first set 6-0 but fell in the second 6-1 then bounced back to win the third 6-0.
The Greyhounds victories came from De Pablos as she defeated Lopez 7-5, 6-0. Zappoli beat Favaron 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 and Cardenas knocked off Lopez in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3).
UMSL concludes its four-game home stand next Saturday hosting Maryville at 11 a.m. at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis.
