INDIANAPOLIS – Freshman
Bennett Cagle's pinch-hit, two-out double in the top of the 10th scored
Owen Faith with the go-ahead run to break a 5-5 tie in the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team's 7-5 win over UIndy on Friday afternoon at Bill Bright Field at Greyhound Park in Indianapolis. The Tritons improve to 21-17, 15-6 GLVC while the Greyhounds fall to 23-16, 14-7 GLVC.
The game looked to be high scoring affair as there were 10 runs scored through the first five innings but the bullpens took over the rest of the way as UIndy's Drake Downing and UMSL's
Dustin Hagens traded zeroes in the seventh through ninth innings. Hagens came on with one out in the sixth and runners at first and second and got a ground out and strikeout to escape the jam.
The Tritons had a chance to take the lead in the seventh but Faith was robbed of extra bases on a diving catch in right center by Carter Thomas to end the inning.
The Hounds had a chance to take the lead in their half of the eighth with two on and two out but Hagens got Chase Mason to ground out to
Justin Terhaar at short to end the inning.
UMSL's 10th inning started innocently enough as Terhaar and
Mitch Bonczkowski each popped out to first base. Faith fell behind in the count 1-2 and laid off some tough pitches to work the walk. Cagle fell behind in the count 1-2 before fouling a pitch off and taking a ball to even the count at 2-2. Cagle hit a hard-hit ground ball past the second baseman into the gap in right center to bring home Faith with the go-ahead run.
Cade Grevengoed followed with an RBI single to bring home Cagle with the all-important insurance run.
Hagens worked a scoreless bottom of the frame to secure his second win of the season. He retired Thomas on a bang-bang play at first, struck out Luke Smock swinging and got Bret Perry to fly out to
LJ Randle to end the game.
The Greyhounds jumped out to the early lead with a run in their half of the first. With two out, Gavin Duran walked and scored on Chase Mason's double to left.
The Tritons answered in the top half of the second. Grevengoed led off the inning with a double down the left field line and scored on
Justin Simard's single to right. UMSL got an RBI double from Bonczkowski and two-run home run from Faith to take a 4-1 lead in the third.
UIndy cut the deficit in half as Mason brought home Austin Bode with a single to right.
UMSL regained its three-run lead in the fourth on an RBI double from Randle but the Hounds got a two-run home from Bode in the home half of the fourth and an RBI single from Jack Kerno in the fifth to tie the score.
The Tritons outhit UIndy in the contest 12-11 and were led by Randle, Bonczkowski and Grevengoed with two each. Hagens went the final 4.2 innings allowing no runs on just two hits with eight strikeouts against one walk.
UMSL and the Greyhounds continue their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. (CDT) at Bill Bright Field at Greyhound Park.
