ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team swept Lewis on Sunday by scores of 13-2 in five innings and 7-4 at the UMSL Softball Field on Sunday afternoon. The wins snapped a six-game losing streak against the Flyers as the Tritons improve to 21-19, 14-6 GLVC while Lewis is 21-19, 10-8 GLVC.
Game 1: UMSL 13 Lewis 2, Five Innings
The Flyers started the scoring in the first inning with a solo home run by Katie Jensen to left field, her first of the season.
UMSL answered in the bottom of the second with a home run of their own.
Phoebe Miller walked to start the inning before
Madison Rozanski singled to center field, advancing to second on the throw while Miller went to third.
Gracie Philpot then homered to right center to put the Tritons up 3-1 for her third of the season.
Lewis scored its final run in the top of the third when Kristen Graham doubled to right center scoring Nicole Magdziasz from second base.
UMSL answered in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs on six hits. Back-to-back singles to center field saw Miller and
Kiley Sullivan get on base before Philpot hit a double to center field, scoring Miller.
Simia Spahiev walked to load the bases then
May Pasqualini cleared them with a double down the left field line making the score 7-2.
Jamie Widule singled to the shortstop to score Pasqualini and
Kaytie Kossina doubled down the right field line to bring home Widule with the final run of the inning.
The Tritons added four more in the fourth. With
Klara Bulla running for Miller on third base and Sullivan at second, Spahiev put the ball in play, bringing home two runners on a dropped fly ball by the Flyer short stop. Pasqualini singled to left center before Widule reached on a throwing error, scoring Pasqualini and Spahiev for UMSL's final two runs.
The Tritons pounded out 13 hits in the contest and were led by Pasqualini, Kossina, Miller, Sullivan and Philpot with two apiece. Philpot drove in four runs in the contest while Pasqualini had three RBIs.
Ashley Ware picked up the win by going the distance allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with two strikeouts to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Game 2: UMSL 7 Lewis 4
UMSL scored first in game two. Miller singled up the middle, scoring Kossina with the help of a throwing error by the center fielder to put the Tritons up 1-0.
UMSL added to its lead with three runs in the second. Rozanski singled down the right field line, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before a Spahiev single up the middle brought her home.
A Kossina single to the pitcher brought Spahiev home from third base and then Sullivan singled to center field scoring Pasqualini from second base to make it 4-0.
In the fourth inning, Sullivan singled up the middle bringing home Spahiev and Pasqualini. Spahiev had reached on a single down the right field line while Pasqualini had drawn her second walk of the game to reach.
The Tritons got close to run-ruling Lewis for the second game when Philpot hit a sacrifice fly out to right center to bring home
Kodie VanEycke who was pinch running for Miller. UMSL couldn't find the eighth run though, sending the game into the sixth inning.
Lewis found a run in the sixth with Tori Richardson pinch hitting for Anna Frafjord. Richardson hit a single down the right field line that brought home the runner on third for the Flyers first run of the game.
The Flyers made it interesting in the seventh inning. Katie Jensen singled to left center to bring in a run and advance a runner to second base. Then, after a pitching change, a walk loaded the bases. Morgan Spodarek singled to left field to make it 7-3. A single up the middle by Richardson scored another Lewis run before
Ashley Borowitz struck out the final two batters to end the game.
The Tritons had 13 hits in the second game too and were led by Kossina and Sullivan with three apiece while Spahiev added two more. Sullivan had three RBIs in the contest.
Jayla Plotz picked up her first collegiate win, pitching 6.1 innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits and striking out three to improve to 1-2 on the season.
UMSL concludes its six-game homestand on Tuesday (April 21) against Central Missouri in a nonconference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at the UMSL Softball Field.
