Tritons Capture 2026 GLVC Championship

PERU, Ind. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's golf team captured its first Great Lakes Valley Conference championship on Sunday, defeating Indianapolis, 3-2, in the finals of medal/match play.

The second-seeded Tritons advanced to the championship match by defeating third seeded Maryville, 3-2, in semifinals, while the top seeded Greyhounds defeated fourth seeded Lewis, 4-1, in the other semifinal.

Emmy Wahl and Hillary Currier got UMSL on the board as Wahl defeated Caroline Whalon by a stroke in the opening match and then Currier rallied from a four-shot deficit to defeat Macey Brown by three shots. Currier squared the match with a par putt on 15 and then won the match when she parred the 18th hole and Brown triple bogied it.

UIndy got wins in the third and fourth matches as Paige Giovenco defeated Hope Williams by eight shots and Ava Ray beat Wilma Zanderau by three shots.

The championship came down to the final match and final hole. Mayan Covarrubias led for the first nine holes but Abby Stone rallied to take a one-shot lead through 12 holes. Covarrubias tied the match with a birdie on 13 and then the players matched pars over the next three holes. Covarrubias grabbed a one-shot lead with a par putt on 17 and Stone made a bogey to send it to 18.

Covarrubias had a tough third shot out of the rough that she ran past the hole. Stone hit her par putt to put the pressure on Covarrubias. She stepped up and rolled the eight-foot putt straight into the hole to trigger a celebration on the green with her teammates.

The win holds additional significance for the Tritons as they secure the GLVC's automatic postseason bid for the NCAA Tournament. UMSL, which was ranked fourth in the most recent NCAA East Regional rankings, is now assured of its spot in the tournament field. The NCAA East Regional runs May 4-6 at the Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.
