ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team took a break from Great Lakes Valley Conference play traveling across the Missouri River for a non-conference game at Division I Lindenwood University on Wednesday evening at the Lou Brock Sports Complex. The Tritons late rally came up short in a 12-8 loss to the Lions.
UMSL drops to 23-19 while Lindenwood is now 22-18.
The Lions jumped out to an early lead scoring five runs on four hits in the home half of the first. Sam Driscoll had a two-run single in the frame while Owen Ralph added a two-run double down the right field line.
The Tritons got two of those runs back in the third. With one out and runners at the corner,
Mitch Bonczkkowski brough home
Justin Simard with a sacrifice fly to left center.
Owen Faith followed with an RBI triple to right center scoring
Justin Terhaar from first.
LWU extended its lead with three runs on one hit, three hit-by-pitches and two walks in the frame. The Lions got another run in the fourth as Driscoll tripled to right scoring Tanner Simpson.
UMSL got a three-run home run from
Bennett Cagle in the fifth inning to pull within 9-5.
Lindenwood got a two-run single from Simpson in its half of the fifth to extend the lead back to six. The Lions final run of the contest scored on a passed ball in the sixth.
The Tritons got an RBI single from
Luke Saxton in the seventh and then in the eighth inning Bonczkowski hit an RBI single to right and
Ethan Landis drew a walk with the bases loaded to make it 12-8.
UMSL had a chance to tie the game in the eighth but Saxton popped out to first to end the inning.
The Tritons outhit Lindenwood 18-10 in the contest and were led by Simard with four hits while Terhaar and Faith had three hits each.
Shea Glotzbach took the loss giving up five runs on four hits with three walks and a strikeout to fall to 0-1 on the season.
UMSL begins its final homestand of the season this Friday (April 24) hosting Lincoln in the start of a four-game series with a single game starting at 2 p.m. at the UMSL Baseball Field.
