ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team dropped two games against Central Missouri on Tuesday afternoon 7-5 and 8-2 at the UMSL Softball Field. The Tritons drop to 21-21 while the Jennies improve to 31-15.
Game 1: UCM 7 UMSL 5
UCM opened the scoring in the top of the first when Bailey Brumley hit a double to left center, scoring Kyrsten Moran who had walked to start the game. Two batters later, Aly Hageman hit a two-run home run down the right field line to make the score 3-0.
UMSL answered in the bottom of the second.
Kiley Sullivan reached on a fielder's choice before
Phoebe Miller doubled to right center, scoring Sullivan.
It was a three run second inning for the Jennies. With runners on second and third and two outs, Brumley singled down the left field line to score two. On the next at bat, Taylor Thompson singled up the middle, scoring Brumley.
The Tritons scored a run in the third when Miller singled down the left field line and
Kaytie Kossina came around to score, aided by a fielding error by Lexi Blackmon in left field.
UMSL got back into the game scoring three times in the sixth. After reaching on a walk,
Maddie Illingworth came around to score thanks to a
Rylie Buchanan ground out to second base.
Madison Rozanski doubled to right center on the next play, scoring
Kiera Hayton. With the bases loaded, Sullivan was hit by a pitch, bringing home Rozanski from third with the final run of the inning.
The Tritons had the chance to take the lead but Miller popped out to second to end the inning.
The Jens added an insurance run in the seventh when Hageman doubled to right center, scoring Marisa Johnson from second.
UMSL had eight hits in the contest and was led by Miller and
Pasqualini with two each.
Sasha Buckberger picked up the loss giving up six runs on four hits with one strikeout in an 1.2 pitched to fall to 4-5 on the season.
Game 2: UCM 8, UMSL 2
Like in game one, UCM opened the scoring. Thompson hit a two-run home run to left field after Moran singled up the middle to start the inning.
It was a five run second inning for the Jennies. After the first three batters got on base, Jaydn Sheffield walked to force home a run. Then Moran hit a bases-clearing triple to center field to double the score at 6-0. Brumley hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Moran for the final run of the inning.
The Jennies added one more in the top of the seventh, off a single from Hageman to right field that scored the runner on third.
The Tritons scored two in the bottom of the seventh off a single up the middle from Kossina. Pasqualini and
Gracie Philpot came around to score from second and third respectively.
UMSL had nine hits in the night cap and were led by Pasqualini with three while Kossina added two more.
Ashley Borowitz picked up the loss, giving up seven runs, six earned, on three hits with one strike out in an one-plus innings pitched to fall to 6-7 on the season.
The Tritons head out on the road for the final time in the regular season with a road trip to Upper Iowa and Quincy this weekend. UMSL will take on the Peacocks in a doubleheader at 12 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in Fayette, Iowa.
