Baseball Extends Win Streak To Five Straight

LIBERTY, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team extended its winning streak to five by sweeping William Jewell 9-2 and 6-2 on Friday afternoon at Fred Flook Field at Talley Stadium in Liberty, Mo. The Tritons improve to 17-14, 11-4 GLVC while the Cardinals are 6-24, 2-13 GLVC.

Game 1 – UMSL 9 WJC 2
William Jewell struck first in the opening inning of game one of the doubleheader with a run on three hits and a walk.

UMSL tied the game in the second. Owen Faith led off the inning with a single to center, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored when the catcher's throw went down the left field line. The Tritons had runners at second and third with no out but couldn't take the lead.

UMSL took its first lead of the contest in the third inning. LJ Randle led off the inning with a walk and went to second on a single from Justin Terhaar. Mitch Bonczkowski followed hitting a three-run home run to right center just out of the reach of the center fielder for his team and GLVC leading 14th round tripper of the season.

The Cardinals got a run back in the fourth inning on a two-out single from Koen Gakstatter that scored Jack Homoly to cut the Triton lead in half.

UMSL broke it open with three runs on two hits in the sixth inning. Brandon Johnson hit a two-run double to left center scoring Noah Tomaras and Luke Saxton to make it 6-2. Terhaar made it 7-2 with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Justin Simard.

The Tritons got two more in the seventh on an RBI single from Saxton and a sacrifice fly from Simard.

UMSL had 11 hits in the contest and was led by Faith with four while Saxton added two more. Eli Cartwright got the start on the mound and went the first innings surrendering two runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Game 2 – UMSL 6 WJC 2
The Tritons jumped out to an early lead just three batters in the second game. Randle led off the game with a single to right and advanced to third on an error by the right fielder. Bonczkowski brought home Randle with a sacrifice fly to center.

UMSL extended its lead with four runs on three hits and two errors in the second. Saxton brought home the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Cade Grevengoed scored on an error by the shortstop to make it 3-0. Terhaar added an RBI single to make it 4-0 and Randle scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the frame.

The Tritons final run came in the third. Faith led off the inning with a walk, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a 643 double play.

William Jewell got an RBI double from Luke Isaacs in the fourth and an RBI single from Bronson Ryan in the seventh for its only two runs of the contest.

UMSL outhit the Cardinals 8-4 in the contest and were led by Randle, Terhaar and Johnson with two each. Bryce Nicolay went the distance on the mound allowing two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts to improve to 3-4 on the season.

The Tritons and William Jewell conclude their four-game series with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fred Flook Field at Talley Stadium.
