Softball Sweeps Panthers on Saturday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team rallied in both ends of its doubleheader to sweep Drury 3-2 and 4-3 at Thompson Field at Meador Park on Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Mo. The Tritons improve to 16-16, 9-3 GLVC while the Panthers are 15-20, 5-9 GLVC.

Game 1: UMSL 3 Drury 2
Drury struck first in the opening game getting an RBI single from Kaley Adzick to bring home Reece Anderson from second.

UMSL tied it in the fourth as Sasha Buckberger reached on an error by the first baseman that allowed Kiley Sullivan to score from third. The Tritons took their first lead of the game in the fifth as Sullivan singled through the right side of the infield with the bases loaded to score May Pasqualini. Gracie Philpot extended the lead with a fly ball to center that was caught and an error by the right fielder allowed Jamie Widule to score from third.

The Panthers got one of those runs back in the sixth on an RBI double from Adzick. Drury had the tying and winning runs on base in the seventh but Ashley Borowitz got a strikeout to end the game and pick up her third save of the season.

UMSL had eight hits in the contest and was led by Sullivan with three while Madison Rozanski added two. Buckberger picked up the win allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts against two walks
to improve to 4-2. Borowitz came on relief in the sixth and threw two scoreless frames with a strikeout.

Game 2: UMSL 4 Drury 3
The Panthers took advantage of two Triton errors to score twice in the first inning of the twin bill. They added a third run in the third inning on an RBI single from Anderson.

UMSL fought back scoring four runs on four hits and an error in its half of the fourth. Philpot lead off the inning with a single to left and advanced to third on an error by the left fielder. Phoebe Miller brought her home with a groundout to short.  Keira Hayton started another rally with a walk, went to second on Rozanski's single to left and then Pasqualini drew a walk to load the bases.

Hayton scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2 and then Widule drove in the tying run with a single to center scoring Rozanski. Kaytie Kossina followed with a single down the right field line scoring Pasqualini with the go-ahead run.

Drury loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but Ashley Ware got a foul out to Kossina at first and then retired Avery Budde on a fly ball to Sullivan in left for the final out of the frame. The Panthers got the tying run aboard in the seventh but a groundout to short ended the game.

UMSL had seven hits in the contest and was led by Widule with two. Ware went the final 4.1 innings giving up no runs on four hits with three strikeouts against two walks to pick up her team tying fifth win of the season.

The Tritons continue their six-game road trop next Saturday (April 11) with a doubleheader against McKendree starting at 12 p.m. at Bearcat Field in Lebanon, Ill.
