ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball had its six-game winning streak snapped with a 7-2 loss to No. 17 Illinois Springfield on Tuesday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field. The Tritons fall to 18-15 while the Prairie Stars are 26-8.
UIS broke a scoreless tie with two runs on three hits in the fourth inning. A walk and a single started the inning. With one out and runners on the corner, Hunter Moser grounded out to short to bring home Kody Morton with the first run of the game. The second run in the inning scored on a single to right from catcher Brian Daker.
The Prairie Stars added to their lead in the fifth inning on a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left to make it 4-0.
UMSL got a run back in its half of the fifth on
Bennett Cagle's two second home run of the season. His solo shot to left led off the inning.
Mitch Bonczkowski hit a two-out double to shallow center but would be left stranded.
UIS added three more runs on a hit and two Triton throwing errors in the sixth. With two on and no out, Daker reached on a bunt single to third. Moser advanced to third on the play and scored on a throwing error by
Justin Simard. Jesse Contreras advanced to third on throwing error and scored on a throwing error by
Brandon Johnson. Daker scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it 7-1.
The Tritons got a run back in the seventh as Bonczkowski brought home Cagle with a groundout to second.
UMSL finished the game with seven hits and was led by
Cade Grevengoed while Bonczkowski, Simard, Cagle,
LJ Randle and
Jutin Terhaar had one each.
Mitch Schleeper got the start on the mound pitching two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Gavin Kinworthy took the loss giving up two runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout in two innings pitched.
The Tritons continue their five-game homestand on Friday hosting McKendree for the start of a four-game weekend series starting at 2 p.m. at the UMSL Baseball Field.
