ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team defeated Maryville 4-3 in the series finale and win three of the four contests in the series on Saturday afternoon at Weber Field. The Tritons improve to 30-20, 24-8 while the Saints drop to 26-23, 20-12 GLVC.
UMSL took advantage of an error in the top of the first to score its first two runs in the contest.
Bennett Cagle reached on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder for what should have been the third out of the inning but instead
Mitch Bonczkowski and
Owen Faith scored.
Maryville tied the game in the second getting an RBI double from Zane Timon and Justin Gorski hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Nick Daugherty.
The Tritons retook the lead with two runs in the fourth.
Justin Simard drove in the go-ahead run with a groundout to second scoring
Cade Grevengoed and then
Justin Terhaar singled in
Luke Saxton to make it 4-2.
The Saints got a run back on an RBI single from Jack Meyer in their half of the seventh.
Maryville put the tying run on base in the ninth but
Brandon Johnson retired the final three hitters to earn his first save of the season.
UMSL had eight hits in the contest and was led by Bonczkowski with two.
Cale Berkbuegler got the final out of the third inning to earn his first win of the season.
The Tritons' next game will be next Thursday (May 7) in the GLVC Tournament at 2:30 p.m. at Mtn Park against an opponent to be determined in Marion, Ill.
