Softball Splits With Truman State on Saturday

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team split its doubleheader against Truman State winning game one 4-3 but dropped the second game 10-3 at the UMSL Softball Field on Saturday afternoon. The Tritons are 25-23, 18-8 GLVC while the Bulldogs are 19-31, 11-15 GLVC.

Game 1: UMSL 4 TSU 3
Truman jumped in front with a run, a hit and an error in the top of the first. Emily Wood led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Cassie Smith's single to right. Smith went to second on a fielding error by Maddie Illingworth but would be left stranded.

UMSL got a two-out rally in its half of the first to tie the game. Kaytie Kossina singled up the middle and scored on Kiley Sullivan's triple down the right field line.

The Tritons took the lead in the fourth with two on and two out, Gracie Philpot singled through the left side of the infield driving in Illingworth and Kodie VanEycke with the go-ahead runs.

UMSL got an insurance run in the sixth as Kenzie Stoltz helped her own cause leading off the inning with a home run to left center for her second of the season.

The Bulldogs took advantage of two errors in the seventh to pull within 4-3 but Ashley Borowitz got the final out to secure the victory and earn her fifth save of the season.

The Tritons had eight hits in the contest and were led by Stoltz and Illingworth with two each. Stoltz got the win in the circle to improve to 5-5 on the season. She pitched 6.2 innings giving up three runs, one earned, on two hits with seven strikeouts against six walks.

Game 2: TSU 10 UMSL 3
Truman jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second game in the top of the first. Smith drove in the first run with a safety squeeze scoring Wood and then Maddie Hickman scored on a passed ball.

The Bulldogs added to their lead with five runs on five hits in the second as five different players drove in a run in the frame.

UMSL got on the board in its half of the second as Stoltz hit her second home run of the day this one down the left field line to make it 7-1.

The Tritons continued to threaten but couldn't get the big hit until the sixth. With two on, Rylie Buchanan ripped a double off the right field fence scoring Jamie Widule and then Illingworth grounded out to second to score Sullivan.

Truman got a three-run home run from Shanna Buford in the seventh to regain its seven-run advantage.

UMSL had 10 hits in game two and was led by Widule with three while Kossina added two more.

Ashley Ware took the loss giving up four runs, three earned, on two hits with three strikeouts but walked two in 1.2 innings pitched to fall to 7-3 on the season.

The Tritons host William Jewell in their final home doubleheader of the season on Sunday starting at noon at the UMSL Softball Field. The team will honor its four seniors after the conclusion of the doubleheader.
