ST. LOUIS—The No. 25 University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team defeated Southwest Baptist 4-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams on Saturday morning at the SBU Soccer Field in Bolivar, Mo. The Tritons improve to 2-1-1, 1-0 GLVC while the Bearcats drop to 2-1-1, 0-1 GLVC.
UMSL opened the scoring six minutes into the game.
Taylor Martin flicked on a ball into the box that
Maddy Kuhn cleaned up by sending low center for her second goal of the season.
Six minutes later
Josie Maddox doubled the Triton lead.
Natalie Heib played a ball over the top and into space that Maddox ran onto to finish lower left. It was Maddox's first goal of the campaign.
Southwest Baptist answered in the 23rd minute when Lydia Fickle found space after Juana Fernandez Calvo played a ball over the top. Fickle finished lower right for her second goal of the season.
UMSL regained its two-goal lead off a corner kick in the 32
nd minute.
Aubrey Rego swung in a perfect ball that
Avery Hesseldenz flicked in, beating the goal keeper high center for her first goal of the season.
Rego added her own goal in the 66
th minute.
Rachel Skyberg won the ball on the outside of the box and found Rego at the top of the 18-yard-box. Rego smashed it lower right to score her first collegiate goal to make it 4-1.
The Tritons finished the contest outshooting the Bearcats 15-6 including 9-1 in shots on goal. UMSL also had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Tritons return to Don Dallas Field on Wednesday (Sept. 9) hosting Upper Iowa at 2 p.m. It'll be the start of a two-match home stand for UMSL.
