Alvaro Barrera is in his second season as the graduate assistant coach for the UMSL men's and women's tennis teams.
The native of Madrid, Spain, he came to UMSL from Bethune Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla., where he was an Academic Mentor and Tutor and was also a Research Assistant.
Barrera has also spent time as the Associate Head Coach at SJP Academy and as a Tennis Instructor at Colegio San Jose Del Parque, both in his home country.
Barrera is a graduate of Bethune Cookman, where he was a four-year member of the men's tennis team. He served as team cpatin, was a 13-time MEAC Player of the Week, was a two-time MEAC Academic Scholar and was the recipient of the Jessie Ball Dupont Endowment and the BCU Men's Tennis Grant.
Barrera is working on his master's in biology at UMSL.
