ST. LOUIS, MO., January 24, 2015 – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team suffered its first loss inside the Mark Twain Building this season on Saturday afternoon with a 66-48 loss to No. 21 ranked Drury in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
Drury shot 51.9 percent in the second half to outscore the Tritons, 42-23, and erase a 25-24 halftime deficit. The Panthers also owned a 43-25 rebounding advantage, including a 15-6 edge on the offensive end, outscoring UMSL, 23-0, in second chance points. The Tritons entered the game ranking first in the GLVC and 16
th in NCAA DII with a rebounding margin of +8.4.
UMSL slips to 8-9 overall, including 4-5 in the GLVC, while Drury improves to 14-3 and 8-1 in the league to maintain hold atop the West Division standings.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 11-2 lead as the Tritons struggled offensively, missing their first nine shots and committing six turnovers. UMSL's first two points came before the game even officially started as Drury was flagged with a technical foul for not having its starting line-up in on time. Senior
Kelly McGovern netted the Tritons' first field goal at the 11:02 mark and ignited a 13-2 run capped with bucket by senior
Tierra Snow that gave UMSL its first lead at 15-13 with 7:24 to play. The Tritons netted 5-of-6 field goals during that stretch and held the Panthers without a field goal for nearly eight and a half minutes. A three-point bucket from junior
Amber Daly with 52 seconds to play gave UMSL a 25-24 lead at halftime.
The Tritons opened the second half by connecting on their first five field goals and took a 37-35 lead on a pair of senior
Alexis Lawrence free throws at the 14:48 mark, but missed their next six from the field as Drury reeled off 13 unanswered to post a 48-37 lead they would not relinquish.
Lawrence scored 16 points for UMSL, finishing 4-of-8 from three-point range, and also collected three steals, while McGovern and Snow added nine points each. McGovern also led the squad with six assists and five rebounds.
The Tritons shot 34.8 percent, while Drury connected at a 41.1 percent clip and was led by Addy Roller's 19 points.
UMSL opens a four-game road trip at Rockhurst on Thursday.
