LIBERTY, MO. – Senior
Tylor Wimbish scored a game-high 22 points, but it wasn't enough to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team to a win at William Jewell on Saturday afternoon as the host Cardinals posted a 69-60 win in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
William Jewell used a late 7-0 run and outscored the Tritons, 14-6, over the final 4:38 en route to the victory. The Cardinals also secured the win by going 8-of-10 at the free throw line in in the final 1:17, finishing 23-of-30 at the charity stripe. UMSL was 11-of-17 at the line.
The Tritons fall to 15-6 overall with the loss, including 7-4 in the GLVC, while William Jewell improves to 9-10 and 5-6 in the league.
UMSL made just one of its first 10 shots as William Jewell jumped out to an early 11-2 lead seven minutes in. But then the Tritons began warming up and connected on six straight from the field, including four three-pointers, taking a 19-17 lead on junior
Derek Williams' long ball at the 7:42 mark. The Cardinals followed with an 11-3 run and posted a 28-22 lead with 3:47 on the clock. UMSL closed out the half with an 8-5 advantage and knotted the score at 30-30 on Wimbish's traditional three-point play, while William Jewell took a 33-30 lead into the break with a three-pointer in the final minute.
UMSL outscored the Cardinals, 11-4, in the first six minutes of the second half, taking a 41-37 lead on a pair of Smith free throws. William Jewell followed with a 15-4 run, capped with nine straight to post a 52-45 advantage with just under nine minutes to play.
Wimbish then scored eight straight for UMSL and a Smith bucket gave the Tritons a 55-54 lead with 4:38 to play. However, William Jewell answered with a 7-0 run for a 61-55 lead en route to the win.
Senior
Aareon Smith recorded his 12
th double-double of the season by scoring 10 points and equaling a career-best 14 rebounds, while senior
Derek Shouse also tallied 10 points.
The Tritons shot 39.6 percent and were 7-of-19 (36.8 percent) from three-point range. UMSL was 6-of-10 from beyond the arc in the first half, but went just 1-of-8 in the final 20 minutes. William Jewell shot an even 38 percent and held a 12-6 advantage in points off turnovers. Both teams pulled down 35 rebounds.
UMSL will wrap up its current four-game road trip next weekend in Indiana. The Tritons are at No. 1 ranked Indianapolis on Thursday and at Saint Joseph's on Saturday.
