Volleyball Drops First Set, But Posts Four-Set Win at Maryville

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Three players posted double digit kills to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team to a 3-1 win at Maryville on Tuesday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. The Tritons dropped the opening set, 25-22, but rallied back for set victories of 25-23, 25-22, 25-18 to secure the victory.
 
UMSL evens its ledger at 15-15 overall, including 8-8 in the GLVC, while Maryville dips to 12-17, 4-12 in the league.
 
Freshman Maddy Russell recorded 15 kills and 11 digs, while junior Lexi Rogers added 14 kills to go with three blocks. Senior Jessica Ploss followed with 12 kills and five blocks.
 
UMSL hit .241 in the match, rebounding from a .120 clip in the opening set loss, with senior Lindsay Meyer dishing out a season-best 47 assists. Meyer also added 14 digs, four kills, two service aces and a pair of blocks to fill out the stat sheet.
 
Senior Erin Walker recorded a team-best 22 digs and the Tritons out-blocked the Saints, 8-6, limiting their hosts to .192 hitting.
 
The Tritons used a late 5-1 run in the second set, capped with four straight kills to take a 19-14 lead. Maryville would get within 23-22 and fended off set point at 24-22 before Russell's kill tied the match at 1-1.
 
In the third set, UMSL used an 11-3 run to close the frame en route to the win, erasing a 19-14 deficit along the way. The Tritons scored five straight during the run, including two kills from Ploss.
 
UMSL owned an 18-9 lead in the fourth set but had to fend off the Saints for the win.
 
The Tritons will conclude the regular season at home this weekend, hosting Missouri S&T on Friday at 7 p.m. and Drury on Saturday at 1 p.m.
