ST. LOUIS, MO. – Four players scored in double figures for the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team on Wednesday night as the Tritons defeated Fontbonne, 77-59, in the 2015-16 home opener.
Junior
Joseph English scored 13 points, while junior
Tre Hymer and freshman
Joshua Webster added 12 points each. Senior
Cortez Conners followed with 10 points.
The win was also the first of the young season for the Tritons, who improve to 1-2 overall. Fontbonne slips to 1-1.
UMSL shot 52.9 percent and held a 33-30 rebounding advantage with Hymer and Cortez pulling down nine and seven boards, respectively.
The Tritons owned a 42-25 halftime lead, using a 16-2 run midway through the first half to turn a one-point lead into a 26-11 advantage with 9:13 to play. Conners scored eight points during that stretch, including back-to-back three-pointers. UMSL hit six first half long balls.
Fontbonne opened the second half on an 11-5 run, pulling within 47-36 five minutes in, but back-to-back threes from English and Webster pushed the lead back to 17. The Griffins got within 10 twice, including 68-58 with 2:24 to play, but would get no closer as UMSL ended the game by outscoring its guests, 9-1.
Webster collected a team-best two steals and dished out two assists, while junior
Alex Majewski had four assists and six rebounds to go with nine points. 10 different players got in the scoring column for the Tritons, which netted 11 three-point field goals.
UMSL returns to the floor on Saturday, hosting Lindenwood at 3 p.m.
