ST. LOUIS, MO. – Freshman
Joshua Webster scored all six of his points in the final one minute 16 seconds to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team to a 67-62 win over crosstown foe Lindenwood on Saturday afternoon.
Lindenwood's Brad Newman hit a three-pointer at the 2:22 mark to put the Lions on top 62-61, but the guests would not score the remainder of the game. Webster cut through the lane with 1:16 to play to give UMSL a 63-62 lead it would not relinquish and then blocked a shot on the opposite end of the floor before draining a jumper in the paint for the 65-62 lead with 24 seconds to go. Webster then hit two free throws with .03 seconds on the clock to seal the victory. He also finished with five assists, three blocks and two steals.
UMSL improves its record to 2-2 with the win, while Lindenwood lost its first game of the year, falling to 3-1.
Senior
Cortez Conners scored 18 points off the bench to lead the Tritons, netting all three three-pointers, while senior
Brandon Marquardt followed with 14 points, going 4-of-8 from beyond the arc as UMSL was 9-of-18 as a team. Junior
Joseph English followed with 11 points.
The second half saw 16 lead changes and six score ties after both teams put up 26 points in the first half of play, in which UMSL led for 18:05. Lindenwood scored five unanswered points late in the contest, taking its largest lead of the game at 52-47 with 7:24 to go before UMSL answered with six straight to pull ahead 53-52 on a jumper by Conners.
UMSL shot 40.7 percent in the win, including 47.8 percent in the second half, while Lindenwood shot 35.6 percent and held a 42-18 rebounding advantage, including an 18-9 edge on the offensive end, outscoring the Tritons, 23-8, in second chance points. The Lions entered the game shooting better than 50 percent from the field and averaging 81.7 points per game.
Junior
Alex Majewski pulled down eight rebounds, while English snagged six boards.
UMSL knocked down three of its first four shot attempts for a quick 7-0 lead and took its largest lead of the half at 19-11 on a Conners three-pointer with 8:19 to play. The Lions responded with a 7-0 run to pull within 19-18 three minutes later before an offensive put back at the buzzer tied the game at 26-26.
UMSL returns to action on Tuesday, hosting another St. Louis area team in Webster at 7 p.m.
