ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team outscored visiting Findlay, 41-23, in the second half en route to a 74-59 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Simone Gillum scored all 14 of her points in the final 20 minutes and was one of four Tritons in double figures. Junior
Sydney Bloch led the way with 16 points, while freshman
Sydney Skaggs finished with 12 points, including eight in the second quarter. Junior
Robneisha Lee added 11 points to go with nine rebounds and six assists.
The Tritons improve to 3-3 overall, while Findlay slips to 3-1 overall with its first loss of the year.
The Oilers clung to a 36-33 halftime lead after an opening half that saw eight lead changes and four ties.
A 10-1 run midway through the third quarter erased a two-point deficit and gave the Tritons a 52-45 lead it would not relinquish with just over three minutes on the clock before a 55-52 lead at the end of the frame. UMSL hit four straight shots during that run with Gillum accounting for five points.
An 11-2 spurt to start the second half put the lead into double figures for good as the Tritons outscored their guests, 18-7, over the final 10 minutes of play. Findlay was 3-of-11 from the field in the third quarter with five turnovers.
USML shot 39.7 percent from the field, including 46.9 percent in the second half and owned a 41-36 rebounding advantage, including an 18-10 edge on the offensive end. Lee snagged five of her rebounds on the offensive end as UMSL held an 18-9 advantage in second chance points and a 17-8 edge in points off turnovers.
The Oilers, which shot 42.9 percent, committed 14 turnovers, while the Tritons finished with a season-low six turnovers. Bloch recorded four steals.
Findlay built a late six-point lead at 34-28 with 1:43 to play in the second quarter before a layup by Skaggs followed by junior
Jordan Boyce's second three-pointer in a two minute stretch pulled the Tritons within 34-31. Findlay then got a bucket in the paint at the buzzer for the three-point halftime lead.
The Tritons are back on the court on Monday at NCAA DI opponent Saint Louis U. While the game will be a regular season contest for the host Billikens, UMSL will play it as an exhibition.
