Tritons Take Advantage at the Free-Throw Line to Garner Third Straight Road Win

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Junior Amber Daly scored 19 points, shooting 14-of-16 at the free throw line, to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team its third straight road win with a 71-58 victory at Indianapolis on Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
 
Daly helped the Tritons to a 25-of-33 performance at the charity stripe, including 8-of-8 in the final minute. Daly scored 17 of her points in the second half, shooting all her free throws during that time, after seeing just five minutes in the first half after picking up two quick fouls.
 
UMSL improves to 11-9 overall, including 7-5 in the GLVC, while UIndy slips to 9-11 and 6-6 in the league.
 
Daly was one of four Triton players to score in double figures as senior Kelly McGovern added 17 points, including 3-of-4 from three-point range and 6-of-6 at the line. Junior Kelly Kunkel recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while senior Tierra Snow netted all six field goal attempts to finish with 13 points.
 
Leading scorer Alexis Lawrence was held to just six points, but dished out a career-best seven assists.
 
UMSL shot 47.6 percent in the win and owned a 33-27 rebounding advantage.
 
Snow made three straight buckets to open the game and UMSL connected on six of its first seven shots to jump out to an early 14-5 lead. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds missed their first nine attempts and were held without a field goal until the 12:24 mark. Kunkel put the lead into double figures (23-12) at the 4:17 mark, while McGovern's three-pointer from the wing at the buzzer gave the Tritons a 33-19 halftime advantage. UMSL shot 52.4 percent in the opening half, while limiting UIndy to just 28 percent shooting. The 19 first half points scored by the Greyhounds were a season-low.
 
The Greyhounds outscored UMSL, 11-4, in the opening two and a half minutes of the second half to pull within 37-30. The Tritons then used a 13-4 run, including a stretch of seven unanswered over the next 5:39 and took their largest lead of the game at 50-34 on a Lawrence three-pointer with just under 12 to play. UIndy followed with six unanswered, but two free throws each from Daly and McGovern made it a 54-40 UMSL advantage.
 
An 11-5 run by the Greyhounds followed and a three-pointer with one minute on the clock made it a 63-56 game, but the Tritons sealed the game at the free throw line.
 
UIndy finished the game shooting 40.4 percent after going 51.8 percent in the second half. Greyhounds' Princess German scored a game-high 25 points, including 21 in the final 20 minutes.
 
UMSL will wrap up its current four-game roadtrip at Saint Joseph's on Saturday.
