Saint Joseph's Scores Final Six Points to Snap Three-Game Win Streak by Women's Basketball

RENSSALEAR, IND., February 7, 2015 – Host Saint Joseph's scored the final six points of the game en route to a 54-53 win over the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference women's basketball action.
 
The Tritons shot 52.5 percent, but committed 18 turnovers and was outrebounded, 29-23, including 14-5 on the offensive end, resulting in a 15-2 second chance points advantage for the Pumas, which shot 40 percent in the win.
 
With the score knotted at 48-48, UMSL scored five straight points and took a 53-48 lead with 3:11 to play on junior Amber Daly's jumper in the paint. However, that would be the final points for the Tritons. Saint Joseph's Lauren Davis scored the game-winning shot with 14 seconds remaining, laying in the ball with just four seconds on the shot clock.
 
UMSL, which was closing out a four-game road trip, slips to 11-10 overall, including 7-6 in the GLVC. The loss snapped a three-game win streak by the Tritons, while Saint Joseph's won its fifth straight at home, improving to 10-13 and 6-7 in the league. The Pumas have also won six of their last eight.
 
Senior Alexis Lawrence drained five three-pointers to score 15 points and also tallied four assists and two steals. Lawrence notched her 200th career three-pointer with her last made long ball and is just one of two players in program history to accomplish that feat.
 
Senior Tierra Snow added 13 points, connecting on 6-of-7 field goals. Snow made her first five shots, all coming in the first half.
 
Junior Kelly Kunkel notched her second straight double-double, recording 12 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Kelly McGovern finished with nine points and a season-best nine assists. McGovern moved her career assists total to 300. She ranks seventh all-time in that category.
 
UMSL made its first three field goals and jumped out to an early 8-2 lead , while the Pumas started 0-of-5 from the field. The Tritons then missed their next six attempts, while also turning the ball over six times. Saint Joseph's netted its first field goal at the 14:11 mark and proceeded to score another two buckets, taking a 10-8 lead midway through the first half. After the Pumas took a 17-14 lead, UMSL scored seven unanswered and Lawrence's three-pointer at the 4:51 mark gave the Tritons a 21-17 lead. Another three-point ball from Lawrence as time wound down sent UMSL to halftime with a 28-26 lead.
 
The Tritons owned an early five-point advantage (33-28) in the second half, while Saint Joseph's never led by more than three. There were five ties and seven lead changes in the final 20 minutes and eight ties and 15 lead changes in the game.

UMSL returns to action on Thursday, hosting Southern Indiana at 5:30 p.m. The Tritons will play four of their final five games at home.
