Softball Takes Two From Wisconsin-Parkside Behind 20 Hits

SOMERS, WIS. – The No. 4 ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team rattled off 20 hits in two games en route to a Great Lakes Valley Conference sweep at Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday. The Tritons won the opener, 8-4, and the nightcap, 8-0, in five innings.

Sophomore Alex Stupek recorded four hits, including two doubles, and scored four runs, while senior Brianna Butler was 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and three walks. Senior Katie Wood knocked out a homerun in each contest.

UMSL improves to 21-3 and 6-2 in GLVC play, while UW-Parkside slips to 4-17 and 0-8 in the league.

The Tritons are back on the road next weekend with doubleheaders at Rockhurst and William Jewell on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

GAME 1: UMSL 7, UWP 4
UMSL wasted no time getting on the board, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning behind a Stupek RBI double and a Butler RBI single.

Butler added an RBI double in the third to stretch the lead to 3-0 before freshman Jennah Perryman tripled the score with a three-run homer to right field in the fourth, her seventh of the season. Senior Katie Rutledge added an RBI single to make it 7-0.

The Rangers, which had been limited to one hit in the first five innings, used three consecutive hits to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning to get on the board and finished the frame with four runs on four hits to trim the deficit to 7-4.

Wood led off the seventh inning with a solo homerun for the final score.

Senior Brittni Chapman moved to 11-1 in the circle, allowing four runs on five hits, while striking out two and walking one in five innings of work. Sophomore Kelsey Bailey tossed two innings in relief, scattering one hit and walking two.

UMSL tallied 12 hits, including three from Butler, who also drew one walk. Perryman was walked four times.

Game 2: UMSL 8, UWP 0 (5 innings)
UMSL got off to another fast start with three runs on four hits in the first inning, including a Wood solo homerun, an RBI double from senior Hannah Wessels and a Butler RBI single.

UMSL's final five runs were all unearned as the Tritons took advantage of three Rangers errors in the third and fourth innings. UMSL scored once in the third after a Wessels single and got three runs on an error by the UWP centerfielder in the fourth with Wood at bat, while Stupek followed with an RBI single for the final score.
