SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team lost its 2015 season opener on Friday with a 1-0 loss at San Francisco State.
The Gators notched the game-winner in the 53
rd minute, when Jakob Velega scored from 10 yards out.
Both teams finished with 10 shots, including five on goal. Sophomore
Nick Werner took three shots for the Tritons, placing two on goal. SF State held a 5-3 shots advantage after the opening 45 minutes of play, while UMSL outshot its host, 7-5, in the final frame. Werner and junior
Leonardo Rodrigues Sanchez each had a shot on goal after the Gators scored, but Emmanuel Jiminez was there for the save.
Junior
Jack Filla played all 90 minutes in goal, registering four saves for the Tritons.
UMSL will close out its trip to California on Sunday with a contest against Humboldt State at 2:30 p.m. (CST).
