ST. CHARLES, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team opened its season on Tuesday night by posting a 7-0 victory at Lindenwood.
Junior
Kayla Delgado led the Tritons with two goals and an assist, while junior
Miriam Taylor also had a two-goal night.
UMSL scored just two minutes 13 seconds into the contest on senior
Sidney Allen's tally when Delgado sent a low cross to the middle of the box. The Tritons fired 10 more shots in the first half, but were stopped by the Lions as keeper Zoe Wetzel recorded four saves.
The first 11 minutes of the second half barely saw any action as each team traded steals and limited each other's opportunities. That is until goals scored in a matter of 37 seconds from Taylor and freshman
McKayla Harder quickly brought the score to 3-0. The Tritons saw several openings in the back of the defense and made tight passes to add to their lead. Taylor found the back of the net again in the 67th minute and after a foul inside Lindenwood's box, Delgado added to her point total by successfuly converting a penalty kick. Less than 14 minutes later, Delgado launched a shot from 30-yards out in the upper corner to extend the lead to 6-0. Senior
Hunter Wagoner capped the night off for the Tritons in the 89th minute.
UMSL outshot Lindenwood, 25-5, including 14-1 in the final 45 minutes of play. The Lions slip to 1-1-1, playing their third straight Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent to open the season.
The Tritons return to the field on Friday when they travel to No. 6 ranked Quincy for the GLVC opener at 5 p.m.
