QUINCY, ILL. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team erased an 16-point second half deficit only to come up short in a 94-92 overtime loss at Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division leader Quincy on Saturday afternoon.
The Tritons trailed by 14 with just over four minutes to play before forcing overtime. Eight straight points pulled UMSL within 74-66 on a layup by senior
Tre Ogles. Then after Quincy scored two on the other end, UMSL outscored Quincy 10-2 to end the half. A tip-in by sophomore
Drew Skaggs on a missed three-pointer by senior
Brandon Marquardt brought UMSL within 76-75. The Hawks netted two free throws on their ensuing possession, but fouled Holmes on a three-point attempt, sending him to the line with half a second remaining where he made two of three.
The Hawks took an 84-81 lead it would not relinquish with 3:13 to play in the extra period, netting the first of two free throws before snagging the offensive rebound on the miss and putting it back. An offensive tip-in by junior
Hunter Reine pulled UMSL with 92-90 with six ticks on the clock, but Quincy made both free throws before another tip in, this one from junior
Alex Majewski, resulted in the final score.
UMSL falls to 6-12 overall, including 0-9 in the GLVC, with six of those losses coming by five points or less. Quincy improves to 12-5 overall, including 7-2 in the league and 10-1 at home this season. This was the fourth game in the last five meetings between UMSL and Quincy that was decided by three or fewer points.
Reine produced his second straight career night, finishing with 21 points and 15 rebounds, while Holmes followed with a career-best 15 points. Senior
Tre Ogles added 14 points, while sophomore
Max Cook netted a career-best 12 points.
UMSL shot 46.5 percent and owned a 48-46 rebounding advantage, while Quincy shot 41.3 percent.
The Hawks took a 41-29 lead into halftime after an opening half that saw each team with a lengthy run. UMSL scored 14 unanswered in a span of 3:32 to erase a 20-9 deficit and take 23-20 lead with just under eight minutes to play, while Quincy embarked on an 18-0 run to turn a 25-23 deficit into a 41-25 advantage. The Tritons scored the final four points of the half at the free throw line.
UMSL begins a four-game homestand on Thursday, hosting William Jewell at 7:30 p.m.
