QUINCY, ILL. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team shot a season-high 57.4 percent, but couldn't pull off the upset bid at No. 18 ranked Quincy on Saturday in Great Lakes Valley Conference action, falling to the Hawks, 81-77, in overtime.
Quincy used a stretch of eight unanswered points in the extra period to help garner the win and hit a pair of free throws with two seconds to play to seal the victory after a three-pointer from junior
Shea O'Brien brought UMSL within 79-77 with 1:07 on the clock.
The Tritons, playing their second straight overtime game and third of the season, slip to 7-10 overall, including 2-7 in the GLVC. Quincy, winners of nine straight, improves to 17-1 overall and 8-1 in league play.
UMSL limited the Hawks to a GLVC season-low 37.1 shooting percentage, but Quincy pulled down 19 offensive rebounds to own a 20-6 advantage in second chance points. The Tritons were also plagued with 24 turnovers that resulted in 22 points on the other end for the home team.
Quincy's Kara Gerbus, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week, sent the game to overtime, netting a pair of free throws with four tenths of a second on the clock after she was fouled on her third offensive putback attempt as time was expiring with the Tritons holding on to a two-point lead.
UMSL had scored six straight in a span of 53 seconds to go on top at 68-66 with seven seconds to play. Redshirt sophomore
Jordan Fletcher knocked in a pair of free throws, while a three-pointer from O'Brien gave the Tritons a 67-66 lead with 52 seconds on the clock. O'Brien then netted the first of two free throws for the 68-66 advantage.
O'Brien equaled her season-high with 16 points, while senior
Kelly Kunkel scored 17 points, netting four three-pointers. Fletcher added in 11 points as nine different UMSL players scored, including seven with at least six points.
Quincy, which clung to a 32-31 halftime lead, used an 8-2 run late in the third quarter to extend a one-point lead into a 51-44 advantage with 13 seconds on the clock, but Kunkel scored four points in a span of six seconds to bring the Tritons within 51-48 at the end of the third quarter.
Both teams pulled down 35 rebounds in a game that saw nine ties and 11 lead changes. Fletcher pulled down nine rebounds and added three assists and two blocked shots
