Women's Basketball Falls to William Jewell on Last Second Lay In

ST. LOUIS, MO. – William Jewell's Adriana Rodriguez laid the ball in as time expired to lift the visiting Cardinals to a 50-48 win over the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team on Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
 
The Tritons took a 47-44 lead with 6:46 to play on a bucket by senior Amber Daly, but didn't net another field goal the remainder of the game, missing their next eight attempts. UMSL's final point came courtesy of senior Kelly Kunkel, who hit the second of two free throws with 2:40 remaining to knot the score at 48-48.
 
UMSL shot just 29.3 percent, its second lowest outing of the year, including 8.3 percent in the fourth quarter. The Tritons slip to 7-11 overall, including 2-8 in the GLVC. William Jewell improves to 8-13 and 3-7 in the league.
 
Redshirt sophomore Jordan Fletcher recorded her second double-double of the year with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Kunkel finished with 12 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Junior Shea O'Brien came off the bench to add 11 points, knocking down three three-pointers.
 
UMSL held a 36-35 rebounding advantage, including a 14-7 edge on the offensive end.
 
The Cardinals shot 37.8 percent, but were limited to 23.8 percent in the second half after a 50 percent first half outing. William Jewell held a 33-31 lead at the break after both teams scored 18 points in the first quarter.
 
Both teams scored just 17 points each in the second half in a game which saw 10 ties and seven lead changes. UMSL's largest lead in the game was four, while William Jewell never led by more than six.
 
UMSL continues its current four-game homestand Saturday, hosting Rockhurst at 1 p.m.
