RENSSELAER, IND. – Junior
Pat Ries scored the game-winner in the 104th minute to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team to a 2-1 double overtime victory at Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
Ries took sophomore
Aldin Sabotic's long pass into the box and beat the Pumas keeper, shooting the ball into the left corner at the 103:48 mark for his team-leading sixth goal.
UMSL improves to 10-3-1 overall, including 9-2-1 in the GLVC, while Saint Joseph's slips to 1-12 and 1-10 in the league. The win is the Tritons' fourth straight, the longest active win streak in the GLVC, and moves UMSL into second place in the league standings after a double overtime tie between Missouri S&T and Southern Indiana.
The Pumas took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute on a flick header, but senior
DJ Bednar knotted the score in the 16
th minute, chipping his shot into the upper left corner of the net off junior
Nick Werner's pass through the box.
Bednar led UMSL with five shots, four of which landed on goal, while Werner had three of his four shots land on goal. Ries' goal was his lone attempt of the contest.
The Tritons finished with 21 shots, including 10 on goal, while Saint Joseph's took 15 shots with five landing on goal. Senior
Jack Filla recorded four saves. Two of the Pumas' shots on goal came in the opening half, while the UMSL defense limited its hosts to just one in the second 45 minute periord and one in the first overtime.
UMSL wraps up its current three-game roadswing at Truman State on Friday.
