Quincy Nets OT Game-Winner to Hand Men’s Soccer 2-1 Loss

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Quincy's Chris McArthur picked up the loose ball and fired from 30 yards out in overtime to help the visiting Hawks to a 2-1 victory over the No. 18 ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

The game-winner came in a contest which saw a little bit of everything, including a stopped penalty kick, two goals waved off and a late goal scored to help force the extra period.

UMSL falls to 10-5-1 overall with its second straight loss, and is now 9-4-1 in the GLVC, while Quincy wins its fifth straight to improve to 10-4-2 and 8-4-2 in the league.

The Tritons appeared to have broken the scoreless game in the 70th minute when senior DJ Bednar headed the ball into the back of the net, but the goal was called off as UMSL was flagged for offsides.

Seven minutes later Quincy was granted a penalty kick, but the attempt by Taylor Ries was stopped by senior keeper Jack Filla, who punched the ball out while diving to his right side. However, the Hawks got the ball past Filla into the back of the net 20 seconds later for the 1-0 lead in the 78th minute.

In the 80th minute, Bednar again appeared to have scored on another header, but the officials also called that goal off, keeping it a 1-0 Quincy advantage.

Then with 1:16 to play in regulation, Bednar passed the ball to junior Pat Ries in the middle with Ries breaking the defense and firing from 12 yards out to knot the score at 1-1.

Quincy outshot UMSL, 14-7, including 6-2 in shots on goal. Ries and junior Nick Werner took two shots each, landing one on goal. Filla recorded four saves in goal.

Filla and Bednar, along with fellow seniors Bronson Melvin, Joe Rund, Evan Garrad and Sacha Benchetrit were all recognized prior to the contest as part of Senior Day activities.

The Tritons wrap up the regular season at home on Wednesday, hosting Maryville at 3:30 p.m.
