NASHVILLE, TENN. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team limited host Trevecca Nazarene to 23.5 percent shooting en route to a 42-31 season-opening victory Friday night at the Pops Duncan Classic.
UMSL opened the second half with an 8-0 run to turn a 20-18 halftime advantage into a 28-18 lead. The Tritons outscored the Trojans, 22-13, in the final 20 minutes.
Senior
Robneisha Lee led the offense with 12 points and added three steals, while four players followed with six points, including junior
Shawnta Johnson, who also pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked four shots, in which Trevecca made just four field goals, shooting 20 percent.
UMSL shot an even 34 percent from the field and was 8-of-9 at the free throw line with Lee making all six attempts.
The Tritons also owned a 43-29 rebounding advantage with junior
Jordan Fletcher pulling down eight to go with a pair of blocked shots and six points. Senior
Sydney Bloch dished out five assists and added seven rebounds.
UMSL returns to the court tomorrow against Kentucky Wesleyan at 5:30 p.m. The Panthers lost a 75-72 overtime game to Drury in the night's first contest.
TRITON TIDBITS: UMSL is 4-1 in season openers under head coach
Katie Vaughn... UMSL went 0-for-9 from three-point range... the Tritons had 20 turnovers, but outscored the Trojans, 10-6, in points off turnovers as the hosts had 16 miscues.
