LOUISVILLE, KY. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team scored all seven of its runs with two outs en route to a 7-4 victory at Bellarmine on Monday afternoon, while senior
Austin Simokaitis notched his 19
th career save to become the program's all-time leader in that category.
The Tritons scored five of those runs in the second inning and finished the day with a 7-6 edge in hits. Junior
Nick Ulrey recorded two hits and three RBIs.
UMSL improves to 15-5 overall, while Bellarmine slips to 9-12. The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 3 p.m. (EST).
After having the first five batters retired, the Tritons struck for five runs with two outs in the second inning. Ulrey ignited the scoring with a two-run double, while senior
Jose Ortiz followed with an RBI double. Junior
Jake Beckwith capped the scoring with a two-run single.
Bellarmine got one run back in the fourth inning, but another RBI from Ulrey, this one on a single up the middle, in the sixth made it 6-1.
The Knights countered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame and a sac fly in the eighth brought the home team within 6-4 before a fielding error by Bellarmine allowed UMSL to score an additional insurance run in the ninth.
Simokaitis retired three straight to secure his record-breaking save, bettering Bob Simpson who had 18 saves from 1985-87. The save was also the eighth of the season for Simokaitis.
Senior
Kyle Wilson garnered the win, going seven and one-thirds of an inning in the start. He allowed four runs on six hits and struck out five, while walking two.
Of UMSL's seven hits, four were doubles, including one from senior
Dominic Orlando, who also tallied two hits on the day.
