CLEARWATER, FLA. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally back for a 5-3 win over Mansfield on Tuesday.
Senior
Dominic Orlando and freshman
Tom DeCero recorded back-to-back RBI triples, which helped knot the score at 3-3, while senior
Jose Oritz drove in the eventual game-winner with a two-out RBI single to second base.
DeCero gave the Tritons an insurance run in the eighth inning with an RBI single that scored Orlando.
UMSL improves to 6-1 overall with the win, while Mansfield dips to 6-4.
The Tritons recorded 10 hits, including two each from DeCero and Ortiz, who both also finished with two RBIs. Orlando and junior
Tanner Hudson also tallied two hits each.
Junior
Jon Shanker picked up the win in relief, tossing one and one-thirds of an inning, while senior
Austin Simokaitis notched save number five of the season in one and one-thirds of an inning. He entered the game with two outs in the eighth inning and two runners on and recorded a strikeout to end the threat before retiring all three batters faced in the ninth inning.
UMSL scored the game's first run in the third inning on Ortiz's RBI single, while Mansfield followed with three unanswered runs, tying the game at 1-1 in the fifth before plating two runs in the top of the seventh for a 2-1 advantage.
Senior
Kyle Wilson went six and one-thirds of an inning in his first start of the year. He scattered five hits and allowed the three runs, while also striking out three.
UMSL is back on the field tomorrow at 2 p.m. (EST) against Cedarville.
