ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team bounced back from a 5-3 game one loss to Missouri S&T to earn a 3-2 win in the nightcap as the two teams squared off in the start of a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series on Friday.
UMSL moves to 25-18 overall, including 8-14 in the GLVC, while Missouri S&T is now also 28-15 overall, including 13-9 in league play.
The series is scheduled to wrap up tomorrow at Noon with another doubleheader.
GAME 1: Missouri S&T 5, UMSL 3
The Tritons saw the visiting Miners score five unanswered en route to the win, erasing UMSL's early 3-0 advantage.
All three Triton runs came in the first inning, which was highlighted by freshman
Tom DeCero's two-run homer, while junior
Tanner Hudson's RBI single made it 3-0.
Missouri S&T then tied it in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of three walks and an UMSL error before taking the lead in the fifth.
Senior
Kurt McGuire had a three-game win streak snapped with the loss. He allowed five runs on six hits, while walking four and striking out seven.
The Tritons tallied 10 hits to the Miners' nine with senior
Jose Ortiz going 3-for-3 with a walk, while junior
Nick Ulrey also recorded three hits.
GAME 2: UMSL 3, Missouri S&T 2
The Tritons scored twice in the fourth inning en route to the win. Hudson's RBI single scored senior
Justin Busekrus to tie the game at 2-2, while Orlando used a sac fly to send home freshman
Matt Foster for the eventual game-winner.
The Miners led 2-1 after one inning with the Tritons scoring on senior
JonMichael Weaver's RBI single.
Junior
Jake Renfrow earned the win in six and one-thirds of an inning, allowing just two runs on nine hits. He also struck out four and did not issue any walks.
Senior
Austin Simokaitis earned save number 14, retiring the one batter he faced, while Ulrey ended the game by throwing out a Miner trying to steal second.
The Tritons finished with four hits.
