ST. LOUIS, MO. – Visiting Lindenwood took a 2-1 decision over the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams.
All three goals came in the first half with the Lions taking an early 1-0 lead in the 16
th minute as Thomas Hutcheson picked up the ball of the deflection of Tritons keeper
Jack Filla for the tally.
Senior
DJ Bednar, the top returning scorer from a year ago with five goals and two assists, evened the count in the 23
rd minute. Bednar found the back of the net on senior
Pim Boonstra's pass from the left side as he sliced through the middle of the box. Junior
Pat Ries was also credited with an assist on the play.
Hutcheson struck against for the guests in the 33
rd minute, scoring from the middle of the box on the cross for the game-winner.
Lindenwood outshot the Tritons, 17-8, including 11-4 in shots on goal. Junior
Nick Werner led UMSL with four shots, while Bednar placed both of his shot attempts on goal.
Despite allowing the two first half goals, Filla finished with nine saves, equaling a career-high. Six of those saves came in the final 45 minutes of play.
