ST. LOUIS, MO. – A goal by visiting Rockhurst three minutes into the second half proved to be the game-winner as the No. 23 ranked Hawks earned a 1-0 win over the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Friday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference women's soccer play.
After having the first two games of a four-game homestand moved off campus due to rain and wet field conditions last weekend, the Tritons were playing their "official" home opener of the 2016 season on the Don Dallas Field.
The loss drops UMSL to 3-2 overall and in the GLVC, while Rockhurst improves to 7-0-1 and 4-0-1 in the league. The Hawks are also now 4-0 on the road, while the Tritons are 0-2 against nationally ranked teams, having also lost to then No. 8 ranked Bellarmine.
Kaley Neiters broke the scoreless game just after the halftime break on her shot from inside the box after a through ball.
The Hawks finished the game with a 14-11 shots advantage, including 7-5 in shots on goal and 3-0 in corner kicks.
Rockhurst outshot the Tritons, 7-5, in the opening half with each team getting a good look at the goal. The Hawks' Courtney Silberberg drilled a shot from outside the 18 that was punched out by Tritons keeper
Emily Rish, while senior
Miriam Taylor fired a shot from the left side of the box that was stopped by Rockhurst goalie Rosie Breheny. Rish finished the half with four saves and made a season-high six in the game.
Sophomore
McKayla Harder nearly got the equalizer in the 58
th minute, but her header went just right of the post. Harder finished with eight shots, including two on goal.
UMSL wraps up its homestand on Sunday, playing host to William Jewell at 12 p.m.
