ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to seven games on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 win over William Jewell in Great Lakes Valley Conference action with all three goals being scored in the first half.
UMSL improves to 6-1-1 overall, including 5-0-1 in the GLVC, while William Jewell dips to 2-5 and 2-4 in the league. The Tritons also moved into a tie for first place with Rockhurst in the GLVC standings as previously unbeaten Drury was knocked off by Quincy today.
The Tritons received their goals from senior
DJ Bednar and sophomore
Kenan Selimovic to go ahead 2-0 before the Cardinals got on the board.
Bednar broke the scoreless game at the 23:01 mark as he slashed through the box, taking senior
Pim Boonstra's short pass. Junior
Nick Werner was also credited with an assist on the play, as he started the action, crossing the ball into the box for Boonstra.
Selimovic then scored his first goal in the 36
th minute, putting the ball into the left pocket of the goal after a beautiful pass from senior
Bronson Melvin. Melvin worked the ball along the right endline before finding Selimovic in the box.
UMSL had its four-game shutout streak snapped with a little over two minutes to play in the half as William Jewell snuck the ball past Tritons keeper
Jack Filla, who finished with three saves.
The Tritons fired 20 shots, including seven on goal, while William Jewell had 12 shots, including five on goal. Bednar led the team with five shots with two landing on target.
UMSL returns to the field Friday night at Missouri S&T.
