EVANSVILLE, IND. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team took advantage of two early goals as the Tritons opened the season with a 2-0 victory at Southern Indiana on Friday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Both goals came in the opening 10:49 of the game. Senior
Miriam Taylor, last year's leading scorer, notched the first goal of the year at the 7:17 mark on a shot from inside the box off passes from sophomore
Lauren Lottmann and senior
Amber Daly.
Then, three and a half minutes later, sophomore
McKayla Harder drilled in a shot from the close right wing for the 2-0 advantage.
The loss for Southern Indiana was the first of the year, dropping the Screaming Eagles to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in league play. USI entered the contest having scored 15 goals in its first three contests.
Freshman
Emily Rish and sophomore
McKenzie DeRouen combined for the shutout, each recording two saves. Rish played 60 minutes in her first collegiate start, while DeRouen preserved the shutout in the final 30 minutes.
Both teams finished with 10 shots, while UMSL held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Taylor placed both of her shots on target, while freshman
Rose Crabtree came off the bench to take four shots, putting two on goal.
UMSL returns to action Sunday, traveling to No. 8 ranked and GLVC preseason favorite Bellarmine.
