Second Half Surge Helps Men's Basketball Knock Off Quincy

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Senior Hunter Reine scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team rally to knock off co-Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division leader Quincy on Thursday night with a 70-69 win.
 
The Tritons, who trailed by 14 early in the second half, outscored the Hawks, 40-28, over the final 20 minutes to garner the win and snap a five-game losing skid.
 
UMSL improves to 9-9 overall, including 3-5 in the GLVC, while Quincy dips to 15-4 and 5-3 in the league.
 
Numbers of Note
-Reine finished 9-of-11 from the floor and netted all four free throw attempts, while also pulling down six rebounds. Reine, who shot better than 70 percent from the field for his third straight game, only had four first half points after playing just four minutes with two early fouls.
 
-Junior Drew Skaggs scored a career-high 14 points, 11 of which came in the first half, and added five rebounds and two steals.
 
-Senior Joseph English followed with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.
 
-UMSL shot 56.3 percent and owned a 31-24 rebounding advantage, while Quincy shot 45.8 percent.
 
-The Tritons overcame 15 turnovers, which led to a 25-13 scoring advantage in points off turnovers for the Hawks, and 57.1 percent (12-of-21) free throw shooting.
 
How it Happened
English scored UMSL's final five points, including the game-winning free throws with 1.2 seconds to play. English laid in the ball with 24 seconds on the clock for the 68-67 lead, but Quincy would retake the lead 18 seconds later before English drove to the basket again and was fouled.
 
UMSL overcame two turnovers in the final 1:29, including one under Quincy's basket with 11.4 seconds to play that led to the Hawks go-ahead bucket five seconds later.
 
The Tritons outscored Quincy, 28-10, over the first 12 minutes of the second half. The Hawks had posted their largest lead of the game at 44-30 with the first bucket of the second half before the run by UMSL gave them a 58-51 lead with just under eight minutes to go.
 
Quincy, which entered the game ranking last in the GLVC in free-throw shooting, knocked down 10-of-11 at the line in the first half and connected on five three-pointers to help take a 41-30 halftime lead. The Tritons shot 54.5 percent, but the Hawks managed to scored 12 points off UMSL's six turnovers.
