ST. LOUIS, MO. – Four players scored in double figures, including 15 from junior
Johnathan Matthews, as the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team posted a 93-52 win over Fontbonne on Saturday evening in a charity exhibition game benefiting United for Puerto Rico.
Matthews also dished out seven assists for the Tritons, which shot 52.3 percent from the field.
Junior
Dwayne Ward followed with 14 points and six rebounds, while junior
Jason Towery added 13 points and four rebounds. Senior
Steven Davis chipped in 11 points.
After a slow start in which both teams struggled from the field, a layup by Ward gave the Tritons a 7-4 lead at the 13:06 mark that ignited an 8-0 run. The Tritons outscored the Griffins, 16-5, over the final 5:30 of the half to take a 41-25 lead into halftime.
UMSL then outscored Fontbonne, 52-27, in the final 20 minutes.
12 of 13 players scored for the Tritons, which owned a 41-34 rebounding advantage. UMSL also forced the Griffins into 23 turnovers and took advantage with 27 points on the other end. Junior
Eric Dust added six rebounds.
Freshman
Steve Webb collected four steals, while freshman
Shane Wissink tallied five assists.
The Tritons will open their season next Friday and Saturday at the GLVC-GLIAC Challenge in Big Rapids, Mich. UMSL will face Grand Valley State and No. 10 ranked Ferris State.
