Women's Basketball Fends Off William Jewell for First GLVC Win

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team saw visiting William Jewell rally back from a 17-point deficit, but in the end the Tritons were able to fend off the Cardinals to secure their first GLVC win of the year with a 57-50 victory.  
 
Senior Shawnta Johnson led UMSL with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists.

How it Happened
The second of two free throws from junior Arielle Jackson gave UMSL its largest lead of the game at 46-29 with 9:39 to go in the contest, but William Jewell followed with a 15-2 run, pulling within 48-44 with 3:50 remaining. The Cardinals got within four on two other occasions, but a pair of free throws from senior Sammie Sproul with two minutes on the clock and a three-pointer from Jackson – the lone field goal for the Tritons in the final quarter – helped UMSL seal the game. The Tritons were just 1-of-5 from the field in the final 10 minutes, but went 9-of-14 at the free throw line.
 
UMSL took a 24-20 lead into halftime, outscoring William Jewell, 16-6, in the second quarter. The Tritons made just one of their first six field goals and trailed, 14-8, after the first quarter before beginning the second frame on a 14-2 run.
 
UMSL outscored the Cardinals, 21-9, in the third quarter for a 45-29 lead with the final quarter to play.
 
Numbers of Note
- Senior Jordan Fletcher added 11 points, four rebounds and two blocks, while junior Kaitlynn Henning also finished with 11 points and recorded four assists and three steals.
- Sproul tallied 10 points and six rebounds.
- UMSL shot 41.3 percent and held a slim 29-28 rebounding advantage, while William Jewell shot 43.2 percent.
- Freshman Alex LaPorta pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists.
 
Up Next
UMSL is idle for final exams until December 16 when the Tritons travel to Culver-Stockton.
