Women's Basketball Uses Strong Second Half to Win Fifth Straight

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team outscored visiting Missouri S&T, 35-17, in the second half en route to claiming a 64-51 victory Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
 
The Tritons improve to 14-10 overall, including 9-7 in the GLVC, with their fifth straight win, while Missouri S&T slips to 10-14, 5-11 in the league.
 
Numbers of Note
-Junior Jordan Fletcher recorded her third double-double of the season with game-highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds, while also picking up two blocked shots.
 
-The Tritons also had three other players in double figures, including senior Robneisha Lee (13 points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals), sophomore Laura Szorenyi (112 points, four assists) and senior Chelsey Jacox (11 points).
 
-UMSL shot 44.2 percent, including 70 percent in the fourth quarter, in which they outscored Missouri S&T, 21-8. The Miners shot 44.2 percent and were limited to 28.6 percent in the final 10 minutes.
 
-The Tritons held a 33-25 rebounding advantage, including a 13-6 edge on the offensive end.
 
How it Happened
Missouri S&T made 6-of-8 field goals in the first quarter to take a 20-14 lead after the opening 10 minutes. The Lady Miners closed the frame on an 11-4 run.
 
A three-pointer by Szorenyi to open the second quarter pulled the Tritons within 20-17, but Missouri S&T would go ahead at the break, 34-29.
 
Six unanswered points by UMSL in the third quarter turned a 38-35 deficit into a 39-38 advantage at the 2:34 mark on two free throws from Lee. Lee also knocked in a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining to knot the score 43-43 heading into the final quarter.
 
The Tritons opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run for a quick 50-43 lead with Jacox scoring the first five points and never looked back.
