Baseball Falls to Maryville in GLVC Opener, Game Two Suspended

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team dropped its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener to Maryville on Friday with in a 10-8 12-inning loss. The two teams then got six innings played of its nightcap before the game was suspended due to darkness with Maryville on top, 5-4.

GAME 1: Maryville 10, UMSL 8 (12 inn.)
How It Happened
-Both teams plated two runs in the first, with the Tritons' coming on a two-run home run from senior Tanner Hudson.
 
- Maryville scored three unanswered over its next two frames, taking a 5-2 lead in the third inning before senior Nick Ulrey cut into the deficit with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the third.
 
- Hudson with a two-out RBI single to score Ulrey in the fifth to make it 6-5.
 
- The Tritons took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth on junior Jacob Monti's two-run double with freshman Derrick Freeman coming all the way from first and beating the throw from home.
 
- With one out and runners on second and third in the seventh, senior Andrew Bicklein struck out the next two batters he faced to preserve the lead, but Bicklein surrendered a two-run homer in the eighth that swung the lead back in favor of the Saints, 8-7.
 
- Hudson led off the ninth with his fourth hit of the game – a stand up double to left field. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on junior Cooper Vinz's sac fly to send the game to extra innings.
 
- Maryville won the game with a two-run homer in the top of the 12th.
 
Key Stats
- Hudson finished with five of UMSL's 16 hits, coming up a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. He added three RBIs and scored two runs. Hudson's five hits also tied the program's single-game record.
- Ulrey added two hits, two RBIs and two runs.
- Junior Alex Oltmann (0-1) took the loss in four and two-thirds innings of relief work – his longest outing of the season. He allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out seven.   
 
Game 2: Maryville 5, UMSL 4 (suspended at the end of the 6th)
Game Highlights
-Monti's RBI single in the third scored senior Jake Beckwith to pull UMSL within 2-1.
-First five batters to the plate reached for the Saints in the fourth inning as the lead grew to 5-1.
-An RBI single from junior Chris Mathes, followed by a throwing error on the same play, sent two UMSL runners across the plate to trim the deficit to 5-3.
-UMSL got one run back in the sixth on sophomore Tom DeCero's one-out bases loaded RBI single.
