QUINCY, ILL. – Junior
Cole McDonald's pinch hit grand slam in the nightcap helped the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team to a 4-3 win at Quincy. The host Hawks earned a 14-11 win in the opener as the two teams opened a four-game GLVC series.
UMSL is now 10-16 overall, including 4-6 in the GLVC, while Quincy is 18-11 and 7-3 in the league. The final two games will be played tomorrow beginning at Noon.
Game 1: Quincy 14, UMSL 11
How It Happened
- The Hawks jumped out to a 10-1 lead after three innings before UMSL knotted it at 11-11 in the top of the ninth. Quincy won on a three-run home run in the bottom of that frame.
- A one-run double from junior
Cooper Vinz and a two-run double from sophomore
Tom DeCero in the sixth made it 10-4, while two more runs came home in the seventh to make it 10-6.
- Four hits led to three runs in the eighth, including a two-run single from senior
Jake Beckwith and a one-run single from junior
Jacob Monti as the Tritons inched within 10-9.
- Quincy added a run in the bottom of the eighth, but DeCero delivered a two-run home run to tie the contest at 11-11.

- Vinz went 4-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored.
- DeCero tallied four RBIs on two hits, while Beckwith drove in two runs.

Jarrett O'Brien added two hits each.

Alex Oltmann (0-2) was tagged with the loss in one inning of relief work.

Brendan Watts went seven and one-thirds of an inning in the start. After allowing 10 runs on eight hits in the first three innings, he gave up just one additional hit. Watts also finished with five strikeouts to one walk.

How it Happened
-A walk and a hit by pitch, along with a DeCero single loaded the bases in the sixth for McDonald, who delivered his first home run.
