Jackson's Buzzer Beater Lifts Tritons Past Southwest Baptist

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Senior Arielle Jackson scored the game-winner as time expired, helping the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team to a 69-67 win over Southwest Baptist on Monday night in a battle of future conference foes.
 
Jackson, who finished with 17 points, including 14 in the second half, drove from the top of the arc to the right elbow where her jumper went straight through the net as the horn sounded.
 
Southwest Baptist will join the GLVC in 2019-20.

How it Happened
UMSL held a 16-12 lead after the first 10 minutes, making 4-of-8 three-pointers during that frame with freshman McKenzie Lathrom knocking down three of those.
 
The Bearcats outscored the Tritons, 15-9, over the first six minutes of the second quarter and took their first lead at 27-25. UMSL upped its advantage to four with two minutes to play, but finished the half with four turnovers, allowing Southwest Baptist to cling to a 34-33 halftime advantage.
 
The Tritons took a 47-46 lead into the final 10 minutes after a third quarter that saw five lead changes and a pair of ties.
 
With the score tied at 60 all late in the fourth quarter, the Tritons used a short 7-3 run, capped with a three-pointer by Jackson to take a 67-63 lead with 94 seconds to go before SBU knotted it up with 24 seconds to play.  
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Sophomore Alex LaPorta recorded 16 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and two steals, notching her second straight double-double.
  • Senior Kaitlynn Henning added 12 points, five rebounds and four steals.
  • UMSL shot 42.9 percent, while Southwest Baptist connected at a 51.9 percent clip and held a 34-31 rebounding advantage, despite a 14-10 edge by the Tritons on the offensive end.
  • UMSL took advantage of 22 Bearcat turnovers, outscoring its guests, 23-15, in points off turnovers.
  • Jackson and Lathrom had five assists each. UMSL had 20 dimes on 27 field goals.

  • Seventh-year head coach Katie Vaughn, the program's all-time wins leader, recorded her 100th victory at UMSL. She has 130 career victories.
  • The Tritons have won 16 straight games in the Mark Twain Building dating back to the 2016-17 season, which includes all 12 last season.
