Men's Basketball Plagued by Turnovers in Loss to UIS

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team was plagued by a season-high 19 turnovers Saturday afternoon and visiting Illinois Springfield took advantage in posting an 83-74 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory.
 
UIS scored 23 points on the miscues and also helped themselves by knocking down 11-of-28 three-pointers.
 
The loss snapped a four-game win streak by the Tritons.

How it Happened
Illinois Springfield took a 43-33 lead into the half, ending the opening stanza with a 14-3 run with the Tritons committing seven turnovers during that stretch. UMSL shot 57.1 percent in first half, but had 12 turnovers that resulted in 14 points on the other end for UIS. The Prairie Stars made eight of their 11 three-pointers in the first half. UMSL had used a 12-0 run midway through the opening frame to turn a 14-8 deficit into a 20-14 lead with 11:35 to play.
 
UIS took its largest lead of the game on the opening basket of the second half, while a 10-3 run by UMSL later cut the deficit to 64-57 with 7:11 to play, but the Tritons would get no closer.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • UMSL finished the game shooting 49 percent, while UIS shot 46.3 percent and held a 39-35 rebounding edge, including a 19-12 advantage on the offensive end.
  • Senior Johnathan Matthews finished with 18 points, while senior Eric Dust added 12 points and seven rebounds. Junior Ronnie Carson finished with 12 points, all coming in the final 8:38.
  • The two teams combined to shoot just 56.6 percent from the free-throw line. The Tritons were 20-of-32 (62.5 percent).
