Women's Basketball Rallies to Defeat Lewis in Battle of GLVC Division Leaders

ROMEOVILLE, ILL. – Junior Kaitlynn Henning knocked in a three-pointer from the corner with 3.1 seconds left to give the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team a 66-63 win at Lewis on Thursday night in a battle of Great Lakes Valley Conference division leaders.
 
The Tritons, who's only lead of the game came on Henning's long ball, outscored the Flyers, 24-5, in the final quarter, including 15-1 over the final 2:45.
 
UMSL, who leads the Central Division, also picked up its sixth straight win with the victory, while East Division leader Lewis saw its 10-game win streak snapped. It was also the Flyers' first home loss in nine home games.  
 
Henning finished with 18 points, eight of which came in the final frame.

How it Happened
UMSL was just 3-of-15 from the field in the first quarter, which included all six misses from three-point range, as Lewis held a 17-6 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
 
 The Tritons outscored the Flyers, 22-15, in the second quarter with nine points coming from senior Shawnta Johnson. UMSL ended the half with a 12-4 run over the final 3:51 with Johnson scoring five of her points during that stretch.
 
Lewis ended the third quarter with a 12-5 spurt to take a 58-42 lead into the final 10 minutes with the Tritons committing four turnovers in the final 3:28.  
 
After Lewis scored the opening bucket of the last quarter to equal its largest lead of the game at 18 points, UMSL scored nine straight and also had a 10-0 run in the frame.
 
Numbers of Note
- UMSL shot 44.6 percent, while the Flyers shot 46.6 percent. Both teams pulled down 31 rebounds and had 17 turnovers.
- The Tritons made their final three three-pointers after going 4-of-16 prior.
- Junior Arielle Jackson and senior Jordan Fletcher added 16 points each, while Johnson followed with 14 points.  
- Johnson added five rebounds and three steals.
- Freshman Alex LaPorta pulled down eight rebounds, while Fletcher grabbed six.
- Lewis was led by NCAA DII's leading scorer Jessica Kelliher, who tallied 25 points.
 
Triton Tidbits
UMSL snapped a six-game losing streak to Lewis and won in Romeoville for the first time since the 2002-03 season… the Tritons improve to 5-4 in road games, including 2-4 in GLVC games… senior Jordan Fletcher moved into seventh place on the career scoring charts (1,084) and is now four rebounds from 600 in her career.
