HUNTSVILLE, ALA. – The No. 14 ranked University of St. Louis softball team opened its 2018 season on Thursday with a split at the Charger Chillout, hosted by Alabama-Huntsville. The Tritons lost their opener, 9-6, to Mississippi College, but bounced back to secure a 3-2 win over Delta State.
UMSL will close out play at the Charger Chillout tomorrow with games against Shorter (12 p.m.) and Trevecca Nazarene (4 p.m.).
Game 1: Mississippi College 9, UMSL 6
How It Happened
The Choctaws owned a 6-0 lead after two and a half innings before UMSL plated three runs in the bottom of the third courtesy of a RBI sac fly from junior
Serena Olson, a RBI double from junior
Chelsea Martinez and an RBI infield single from sophomore
Andee Tiffee.
Tiffee picked up her second RBI of the game in the fifth on a sac fly that cut the deficit to 6-4, but Mississippi College plated three runs in the sixth.
UMSL tallied four of its 10 hits in the bottom of the seventh, including a two-out, two-run single from freshman
Carly Kudary that accounted for the final score of 9-6.
Inside the Box Score
The Choctaws tallied 14 hits, including five doubles and a pair of home runs, and took advantage of three UMSL errors, which led to three unearned runs.
Tiffee was tagged with the loss, allowing all nine runs in five innings of works. She walked three and struck out nine.
Offensively, Tiffee was one of two players to tally two hits with Martinez and junior
Reagan Osborn adding two hits each.
Redshirt sophomore
Morgan Hill walked twice and scored twice. Sophomore
CoCo Caraway also picked up two walks.
Game 2: UMSL vs. Delta State
How It Happened
Both teams plated a run in the second inning with UMSL's coming on two outs with two runners as the throw from Kudary's single was muffed, allowing Tiffee to cross home.
The two teams added a run each in the fifth. Senior
Jennah Perryman scored for the Tritons on an RBI single up the middle from Martinez.
An RBI double from junior
Lizzy Miller made it 3-2 UMSL in the sixth. Delta State looked to tie it up again, loading the bases with no outs, but Caraway came in relief of freshman
Sapphire Munoz, who was making her first collegiate start, to retire three straight, including the first two on a strikeout.
The Lady Statesmen two on base to end the game and had a player thrown out at home by Osborn at shortstop on a fielder's choice.
Inside the Box Score
Munoz recorded her first win, while Caraway picked up the save in two scoreless innings.
Delta State recorded 12 hits, while UMSL tallied 10, including two each from Perryman and Miller.
