Freeman's Grand Slam Helps Baseball to Split at Drury to Open GLVC Play

SPRINGFIELD, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team bounced back from an 18-0 loss at Drury on Saturday to post a 7-4 win in game two as the teams squared off to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
 
Redshirt sophomore Derrick Freeman had a grand slam to help the Tritons to the win.
 
UMSL and Drury will close out their four-game series with another doubleheader tomorrow.
 
Records: UMSL (9-11, 1-1 GLVC), Drury (9-14, 1-1 GLVC)
 
Game 1: Drury 18, UMSL 0
UMSL was limited to five hits, including two each from senior Cooper Vinz and freshman AJ Davis.
 
Panthers hurler Austin Simms threw the complete game, striking out 11.
 
Drury recorded 16 hits.
 
Game 2: UMSL 7, Drury 4
Redshirt junior Brian Seymour led off the game with a triple and scored on Vinz's single for a 1-0 lead.
 
Single runs in the second and the third by Drury gave the home team a 2-1 lead before Freeman's two-out grand slam, which was his second homer of the season. A pair of walks and a single by freshman Josh Shoemaker loaded the bases for Freeman.
 
UMSL added two more runs in fifth, taking advantage of two walks before Shoemaker delivered the lone hit of the frame with a two-run single.
 
Junior Michael Houchin earned his first win, while senior Alex Oltmann tossed two and one-thirds perfect innings, retiring all seven batters he faced for the save.
 
Both teams recorded seven hits. Seymour and Shoemaker had two each, while junior Tom DeCero drew two walks, scoring both times he got on base.
