Volleyball Completes Upset Over No. 23 Augustana, Falls to Eckerd

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team earned a 15-9 fifth set victory to complete the upset over No. 23 ranked Augustana (S.D.) on Saturday at the Eckerd College Invitational, but suffered a 3-1 setback to the host school in its finale.

UMSL 3, Augustana 2 (25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 28-30, 15-9)
The Tritons won the opening frame, 25-20, while the Augie's took the second set, 25-21. Set three went to UMSL, 25-17. The Tritons rallied from an early five-point deficit in set four before taking match point at 24-23 on a kill from junior Kylie Rudsinski, but Augustana fended off two other match points in the 30-28 victory, forcing the decisive set.

Rudsinski was one of four Tritons in double figures with 16 kills, while junior Selena Nolte led the way with 22. UMSL hit .302 with sophomore Payton Kennelly directing the offense with a career-high 33 assists. She also notched the double-double with 12 digs, while freshman Cara Ferchen added 29 assists and 18 digs.

Augustana, which tallied 10 service aces, hit .186 and owned a 12-10 blocking advantage. Junior Amanda Vollmer had six blocks, while freshman libero Megan Woll had a match-high 24 digs.


Eckerd 3, UMSL 1 (24-26, 25-20, 25-9, 25-23)
Match Notables
  • SET 1: UMSL owned 17-11 lead in the first set, but saw Eckerd (3-1) follow with a 12-5 run to pull ahead 23-22. A kill from Nolte gave the Tritons set point at 24-23, but the home team scored three straight to take a 1-0 lead.
  • SET 2: A 5-0 run, which included two kills each from senior Maddy Russell and freshman Charlotte Richards gave UMSL a 17-15 lead they would not relinquish.
  • SET 3: UMSL had just five kills.
  • SET 4: A kill from Nolte gave UMSL a 21-17 lead, but Eckerd followed with five straight to pull ahead 22-21.
 
Statistically Speaking
  • Russell recorded a team-high 13 kills, while Rudsinski followed with 12, while also adding five blocks.
  • Woll registered 26 digs, while Kennelly finished with 22 assists and nine digs.
  • UMSL hit a season-low .201, while Eckerd hit .318, including .609 in the third set.
