Norton Nets Game-Winner in Double OT as Women's Soccer Wins Opener

BIG RAPIDS, MICH. – Senior Lexi Norton found the back of the net with just over four minutes to play in the second overtime to give the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team a 2-1 win at Ferris State on Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite being outshot 15-2 in the first half, the Tritons got on the board first, netting the first goal of the season off the foot of junior Rose Crabtree in the 31st minute with the assist to freshman Imogen Bennett.
  • Sophomore Amber Hayes tallied 10 first half saves.
  • Ferris State scored the equalizer in the 52nd minute.
  • Norton's game-winner came in the 106th minute when senior Taylor Andert played the ball behind the defense. Norton got to it first, drew the defender on one side and ran around her on the other side, chipping the ball into the net.
 
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Hayes finished with a career-best 13 saves.
  • Andert and Norton took two shots each.
 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • UMSL won its sixth straight season opener, which includes all five under fifth-year head coach Wendy Dillinger.
 
UP NEXT: UMSL travels to No. 6 ranked Grand Valley State on Saturday at Noon (EST).
